The Obalon is a Non-surgical tool to aid for weight loss. For best results, this type of procedure should be used in conjunction with diet, exercise and a behavior modification program.
The Obalon is a soft expandable material filled with air. It is a 10-minute procedure without any sedation. It involves swallowing a capsule with a deflated balloon and placing it into the stomach. The patient swallows the first Obalon capsule containing a medium sized shrunk balloon. The capsule will be connected to a thin, flexible micro- catheter. The doctor will fill the capsule with air through the catheter once it reaches the stomach. Then, the doctor pulls the catheter out and leaves the balloon for six months. It is also required for the patient to swallow another capsule in less than a month and a third capsule after 45 days to 60 days to complete the whole procedure.
Endoscopic procedure is used for the balloon removal: The balloon should be removed after 3 months by Gastroscopy under sedation.
Adverse Events nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain are common for the first few days. Medications can help to minimize these side effects.
